“The Best Canadian Poetry represents notable poems published in years past, but it also reminds us of all the goings-on in literary culture across a nation”—Lori A. May, Poets Quarterly Guest editor Sonnet L’Abbé, Ph.D. is the author of two collections of poetry, A Strange Relief and Killarnoe, both published by McClelland and Stewart. Like many other states of being, poetry is a spectrum, and the choices in Best Canadian Poetry represent a piece of this spectrum well (while a few play with formal expectations, only Katie McGarry’s “r u ok” – presented as a flow chart – steps outside the words-on-page scope of poetry), highlighting new and familiar names. Modern literature, which begins in the early s, contains all literary movements expressed in the English speaking literary world, in all genres, and continues to post-modernism and contemporary writing. General Works includes the Canadian Parliamentary Handbook and How Parliament Works by John Bejermi, government analysis and cultural essays.

As a side note, a former English professor and thesis advisor of mine, Richard Lemm another typical Canadian career poet, is mentioned in the acknowledgements of this book. In , this career poet published his masterpiece and was awarded the top prize in Canadian Poetry, the Governor General’s Award. At the very bottom of this post, you will find a table with the list of all poetry publishers we found. The reason that list is even bigger is that about 40 of those publishers were not currently accepting submissions at the time we did this research in September, We just wanted to include the extra list of publishers to make it.
